The primary goal of a DSP is to assist individuals who are experiencing intellectual/developmental disabilities lead a self-directed life and assist them in participating fully in their communities. It is vital a DSP respects each client’s rights and encourages them to exercise their rights as an individual, empowering them to live the highest quality of life. Strong communication and the ability to adapt under pressure are important skills for DSPs to have as they spend the majority of time assisting clients with activities of daily living, such as shopping, cleaning, making appointments, and interacting with families and friends, and teaching them to improve their skills as they work toward being as independence as possible.
Qualifications
Have a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Have a valid driver’s license (if driving is needed).
Be 18 years of age or older.
Typical Pay for a DSP
Pay scales for Direct Support Professionals vary across agencies, most DSPs earn $15-$18/hour.
